The 2014 Bicycle Master Plan's vision is for bicyclists of all ages and abilities to have access to a safe, well-connected network linking all areas of Bellingham. Since the Bicycle Master Plan (BMP) was adopted, over 50% of the bikeway projects identified in the plan have been completed, but the City has also grown in the same timeframe and the needs of the community have changed. The goal for updating the BMP is to continue work that advances a safe, connected, and comfortable bicycle network, and identify supportive policies and programs that encourage active transportation in Bellingham.

The Bicycle Master Plan Update will focus on completing bike network links, evaluating options for challenging bikeway connections, enhancing some existing bikeway connections, and developing a new prioritized list of projects. It will also consider the viability of integrating some unimproved rights-of-way into the citywide bicycle network. Public engagement is an integral part of the BMP update and will be used to inform projects, programs and priorities for Bellingham’s active transportation networks for people of all ages and abilities to safely and conveniently walk, bike and roll.

We want to hear about your experiences and ideas for continuing to improve biking for everyone in Bellingham. Take the survey below and add your ideas to the map. We also want to know about areas that are challenging to navigate for kids, older adults and persons with disabilities.

What happens after the discovery phase?

The information gathered during the discovery phase will then be used to update the existing Bicycle Master Plan. The draft plan update will be presented to the public in Spring 2023 for additional input. Once drafts of both the Pedestrian Master Plan and Bicycle Master Plan updates are complete, they will be presented to City Council in Summer/Fall 2023.
