Consultation has concluded
Tell us what type of art you would like to see in this location!
The City of Bellingham recently sought qualifications from muralists who could create a large-scale mural on the pillars and a retaining wall at the underpass located on Birchwood Avenue, between Squalicum Parkway and James Street, in Bellingham. The City received forty responses from artists/artist teams. The Bellingham Arts Commission reviewed all submittals and selected five artists to develop proposals for the site. We invite community members to provide input on the art at this location. In an effort to create artwork that appeals to neighborhood stakeholders, we especially hope to hear from people who use this road and live in the area.
Take our survey below to share your feedback! Responses will be accepted through March 3, 2023.
This project is subject to the City's One Percent for the Arts program, which dedicates one percent of large capital project budgets for the incorporation of artwork. The inclusion of artwork in public places reinforces Bellingham as a regional arts destination, increases quality of life and attracts tourism and visitors to the area.
Community feedback will be provided to the artists/artist teams to inform their proposals. The artists/artist teams will still reserve the right to interpret input through their lens as an artist.
