Consultation has concluded
Design of the next phase of Cordata Community Park is underway!
Phase 2 development of Cordata Community Park is grounded in the vision of the Park Master plan adopted by City Council in 2017 and will extend the range of high quality recreational opportunities in Cordata Park to the citizens of Bellingham. Please check out the full project scope, budget, and schedule in the Cordata Park Phase 2 Presentation underneath the "Documents" tab.
Cordata Park - view north to south
Park improvements coming with phase two include:
Park pavilion and restrooms
Flexible-use lawn area and stage
Small lighted picnic shelter with tables
Pickleball courts
Basketball court
Benches, picnic tables, trash and recycling, signs, and bike racks
This project also includes mitigation for impacts to wetlands buffers. This project also seeks to incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings where possible.
The City acquired the 25-acre park in 2015, and the Park officially opened in September 2020 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Click here to view the Cordata Park Opening video. Phase 2 development is funded by park impact fees and the Greenways Four levy.

The Phase Two plans do not include a dog off leash area because the consensus was to locate it in Julianna Park during park master planning phase of the project.

The two bridges with the 36 ton load limits are on the emergency access route into the park. The four bridges with 15 ton load limits will support Park maintenance vehicles. BTW, we will reduce the size of the existing bridge load signage in Phase Two.

Between 2020 and 2021 the City planted over 14,000 trees, shrubs, grasses and forbs, about half went into mitigating for unavoidable impacts wetland and wetland buffers. Buffer planting were bare root and consisted of plants that are typical of the Puget Sound Basin. Other plantings that were installed in the norther park core were mostly containerized ornamentals to define spaces, buffer activity areas, provide for seasonal interest, gateways and edges. We are maintaining them, and eventually the plants will contribute to songbird habitat, provide shade, ease storm water runoff, and create some very nice spaces. More plantings are planned for Phase Two, as well.

The documents tab is a square shaped area with links you can click on. The tab is below park staff contacts on the main project page.

"Consensus among the groups associated with the master plan process was that lighting throughout the park will be the minimum required for pedestrian and traffic safety and to meet CEPTED guidelines for crime prevention. There will be no lighted sports facilities and light poles will not be taller than standard 25 ft. – 30 ft. parking lot fixtures. Final planning decisions on lighting the trail and pathway system throughout the Park will be made during subsequent design phases." Page 40, Cordata Community Park Master Plan, June 22, 2017

Yes. Phase 1 north area was planted last year, and the wetland mitigation planting was completed earlier in 2021. Phase 2 planting design will be similar to Phase 1, except we will plant more resilient grasses to withstand foot traffic. Wetland buffer mitigation planting will also be similar to Phase 1 and will include a variety of native plants species.
