As part of our commitment to involving the community in selecting our new Police Chief, we are seeking your feedback about characteristics and priorities we should be considering during our review of candidate applications and during interviews with finalists.

Your feedback will be used to help shape these steps and provide us with valuable insight as we consider candidates for the position.

The Bellingham Police Chief reports to the Mayor, providing leadership and direction to the 188 employees who are responsible for police protection and law enforcement services within the City. The Police Chief is a key member of the City’s management team, highly engaged with the community, and interacts regularly with regional law enforcement leaders, elected officials, neighborhood groups and many others. Like so many communities across the nation, we see the years ahead as transformational for law enforcement and public safety. Opportunities and challenges for our new Police Chief will include: developing non-enforcement responses; expanding behavioral health programs; recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce; eliminating structural and institutional racism; increasing equity and access to services; promoting transparency and accountability; and continuing to strengthen the department’s culture of compassion, integrity and professionalism.

You are invited to share your thoughts about the leader who will champion these and other initiatives while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Bellingham Police Department by completing the community feedback questionnaire below. The questionnaire will be available through end of day Friday, April 16, 2021.
