NEW! Documents regarding Electrification Code Updates.

Please see these documents associated with proposed changes to Bellingham's building code to be presented to City Council on 12/13/21.

With the help and support of our community, the City of Bellingham develops and implements strategies to reduce the impact of government and community activities on our climate. This is necessary in order to ensure a healthy, vibrant, safe and equitable home for current and future generations, as promised in Bellingham’s Legacies and Strategic Commitments.

In February 2021, Bellingham City Council approved a 2021 Climate Implementation Plan developed by City staff through a vetting process called the Climate Policy Approval Process. This plan outlines the tasks from the Climate Action Plan (CAP) and Climate Action Task Force (CTF) Final Report that City staff have been prioritizing in 2021, and provides details on estimated level of effort, known major milestones within each task, and the role of City Departments in supporting each task. The Climate Implementation Plan will be reviewed and updated each year after receiving public input and Council approval. You can receive updates about the notable items that City staff are working on from the Climate Implementation Plan by signing up for our quarterly Climate News emails and visiting our News and Highlights webpage.

Achieving Bellingham’s climate goals will only be possible with our community joining us in taking steps towards securing a clean and vibrant future. Learn how you can get involved and find local resources on our ALL IN for Climate Action webpage.

Additionally, we encourage community members to engage with us in the following ways:

  • Take the survey to tell us about your biggest obstacles
  • Ask us a question about what we are working on
  • Find helpful resources and take the "I'm In" pledge
  • Sign up for climate email updates.

Join hundreds of Bellingham community members who have made a personal commitment to take steps for climate action by taking the I’m In for Climate Action pledge. When it comes to climate action, we all have a role to play. The top 3 actions you can personally take that will have the biggest impact on reducing Bellingham’s emissions and protecting our future are to:

    • Shift your transportation mode away from solo driving trips in gas-powered vehicles to more efficient modes of travel, such as riding the bus, biking, walking, carpooling, and driving an electric vehicle.
    • Use less energy inside your home.
    • Switch to renewable energy by supporting green power through your electricity bill or installing solar panels on your property.

Together, our small choices create big impacts.
